How to calculate zakat, step by step
1. Add up all zakatable wealth in one currency: cash and balances, the value of saved gold and silver at today's prices, the market value of shares, trade goods and collectable money owed to you.
2. Subtract debts that are due now.
3. Compare the result with the nisab (85 g of gold or 595 g of silver). If it has reached the nisab for a full lunar year, 2.5% is due.
Zakat on gold by karat
The nisab is measured in pure gold, so each karat is converted to its 24K equivalent: 1 g of 21K = 0.875 g pure, 1 g of 18K = 0.75 g. For example, 100 g of 21K equals 87.5 g of pure gold — above the 85 g nisab.
Gold or silver nisab?
The silver nisab is worth far less than the gold nisab today, so using it makes zakat due on smaller amounts. The calculator lets you choose and shows both values in your currency. Someone holding only gold uses the gold nisab; only silver, the silver nisab.
